| The Prefecture of Chania is located in the west side of the island and occupies an area of 2.375 square kilometers. North it is washed by the Cretan Sea and south by the Libyan Sea , while eastward borders on with the Prefecture of Rethymnon . The capital of the Prefecture is the city of Chania with a population of about 65.000 people, whereas the entire prefecture has 110.000 inhabitants.
Chania town is built on the ruins of Ancient Kidonia and lived many invaders. The city knew many civilizations of which the traces are clear, the building frontages, the castles, the walls, the monasteries and the churches.
The town has two entrances: the airport at Akrotiri and Souda port (the biggest one of Mesogios Sea). The ruling position at the center of the town has the Municipal Market, a glorious building in a crossed shape.
The Municipal Garden is situated in a short distance from the city center and near the park of Peace and Friendship of the Populations.
The picturesque Venetian port attracts many visitors or locals and offers many choices of entertainment for all preferences and demands. Narrow, paved streets surrounded from renovated houses of different times, are offered for a pleasant walk.
You should visit the naval harbour, the Fortress Firkas, the Christian district Topana , the pane of Kioutsouk Hasan , the Big Arsenali the biggest that the seven dome-roofed Venetian shipyards. It still worth to see in the old city the church San Salvatore that accommodates the Byzantine Collection, the hill Kasteli , the aristocratic district of Halepas , the war and Chemical museum of city, Fragokastello and the gorge of Samaria.
In a distance of 9 km away from Chania, there are the beautiful village of Platanias, during summer, changed into tourist resorts. They offer a very nice beach opposite Thodorou island.
