Heraklia is a small island that belongs to the complex of the Small Eastern Cyclades. It lies between Ios and Naxos, it has a surface area of approx. 18 sq. km and its terrain is mountainous, with appreciable vegetation and a lot of spring waters. It is an ideal place for quiet holidays, for resting and relaxation.

When you are on the island you should visit by all means the church of Agios Ioannis, which is built in a cave with stalactites and stalagmites of various colours and shapes. According to the tradition, the picture of Agios Ioannis was found in the cave by a shepherd and for that reason the church was built there.

It is also worth visiting:
The castle at Livadi where you will see ruins from the temples of Zeus and goddess Tyche, as well as the ruins of a castle of the Hellenistic period.
The Merichas-cove that is surrounded by tall cliffs.
The mountain Papas that offers an excellent view of the nearby islands and it is a refuge of rare species of birds.

Famous beaches of Heraklia are: Agios Georgios, Livadi, Alimia, Vorini Spilia, Karvounolakos and Amoudi of Merihas

You should try the fine quality thyme honey, the locally made cheese, the fava (broad bean recipe) and of course fresh fish.

If you plan to visit Heraklia you should keep in mind that there are no banks, gas stations, buses, or taxi's to serve you.

How to get there
By Ferry: There are itineraries from Piraeus port to Herakleia. There are daily itineraries from Naxos.
