Milos is situated at the southwestern part of Cyclades. It is the fifth island (in size) of the complex and it is 86 nautical miles far away from Piraeus. It extends in land of 151sq. km, and it offers a total coastal length of 125km and numerous sandy beaches. It is an admirable island with volcanic ground, wonderful colours and impressive geomorphologic formations, which offer an amazing result of natural beauty.

At Milos you should visit:
The archaeological Museum. It is housed at a neoclassic building, a construction of E.Tsiller, built in 1870 and operates as a Museum since 1985. The Museum contains the Prehistoric collection from Filakopi, the collection of Opsianou and other sculptures. Between the exhibits you will find a fine copy of the statue of Venus of Milos. The famous genuine statue of Venus of Milos was found by a farmer in 1820 at the ruins of the Ancient Theatre of Milos. It is dated back to the Hellenistic period, probably to 150-50 B.C. Nowadays, the statue of Venus of Milos can be found at the Museum of Louvre, in Paris.  
At the Archaeological Museum of Louvre you can also find various statuettes, vessels, obsidian tools, signs, ceramics and sculptures of the Classic and Roman Periods.

The Folklore Museum. It is housed in a building of 200years old created in 1967. The Museum presents exhibits which show the social condition of the inhabitants of Milos from the period of the 17th century and after. Between the exhibits you will find needleworks, textiles, vessels, a typical kitchen of this age, a bedroom, a cellar which was used as a store of agricultural products etc.

The Mining Museum.
It started to work in 1998 aiming to honour and promote the mining history of the island. At the room of the ground floor you will find the model which shows how a volcano erupts, the geological map of the island, photos and other tools from older mines. At the first floor there are showcases which present rocks and minerals from various areas of Greece. Also, there are showcases presenting the most industrially significant minerals of Milos today and fossils, obsidian, bauxite, alumina and aluminium.

The Ecclesiastical Museum.
It is housed in the thousand-year-old church of the Holy Trinity, situated near Adamantas beach. At the Museum you can find interesting exhibits regarding icons, wood carvings, iconostases, silver chalices and censers of the 18th century, gold votive offerings etc.

The catacombs.
They are situated at the area of the ancient city, 150m. above the sea level, on a steep hillside. It was a place of gathering of the early Christians, where they held their religious ceremonies and buried their dead, away from the pagans of that time and their persecutors. They were discovered by illicit antique dealers and became known, after their pillage, in 1840. There are three big chambers, five corridors and a dead end passage. The complex has 185m total length. At this age the entrances were exterior, now there is only the entrance of the second chamber.

The ancient theatre of Milos.
It is dated back to the Hellenistic Period and has visible Roman influences. The preserved parts of the theatre are the concave with seven marble rows of seats, the orchestra, the floor of the stage building, and many elaborate architectural parts.

The ancient city of Filakopi.
It is situated at the north part of the island, near Pollonia, and it is one of the most important settlements of the Prehistoric Aegean. There you will find three settlements.

The Venetian Fortress.
It is situated at Plaka, on the hill of Prophet Helias. It was built by Venetian nobles during the period of the 13th century. Inside the fortress there is the church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Skiniotissa.

Aside from the above sights, Milos has to offer impressive natural sights which the visitor should not miss. The nature created wonderful geological and geomorphologic formations which are ready to impress the visitor…

You should visit:

The volcano of Firiplaka.
It is situated at the central and south part of the island and has an impressive crater, with a diameter of 1.700 metres and height of 220 metres approximately.

The volcano or Trachila.
It is situated at the north and north-western part of the island of which only a small part still remains.

The small islets Glaronisia.
They are located at the north part of the island and they are three small islets created by volcano lava.

Papafraga
Cave. It is one of the most known natural sights of the island. It regards three caves on the way from Adamantas to Apollonia and near the Archaeological sight of Filakopi. The huge white rocks sculptured by the waves create a majestic landscape made by formations which remind natural sculptures. They took its name by a priest who used to lay up his boats. A tour by boat to Papafraga cave is essential, since it can offer to the visitor amazing pictures of exceptional natural beauty.


Sarakiniko. It is situated at the north part of the island and it is a white volcano formation with constant alternations of volcano materials. There you will find numerous fossils and an eminent moonscape with white rocks ending into the sea. Sarakiniko is a one of the most known beaches of the island.

Impressive geomorphologic formations which play with the sea, wonderful beaches, interesting sights, nice and picturesque settlements are some of the characteristics of the island.

The most known settlements of Milos are the following: Adamantas, Zefiria, Klima, Plaka, Pollonia, Triovasali & Plakes and Tripiti.

Adamantas. It is the central port of Milos and it is considered to be one of the biggest natural ports of the Mediterranean Sea. It offers two beaches (Lagatha and Papikinou) and allocates many hotels, apartments, cafe, restaurants, taverns, shops and night clubs.

the church of the Holy Trinity of the 17th century and the Mining Museum

Zefiria. It is situated in a distance of 5,5km from Adamantas and it is the first medieval capital of Milos. Today it has 150 permanent inhabitants.
Don’t miss to visit: Panagia (Virgin Mary) Portiani of the 17th century which was the cathedral of Milos and the eldest church of Zefiria.

Klima.
It is a small fishing village which is 2km far away from Plaka. Near the village you will find the catacombs, the most important religious monument of the island.
Don’t miss to visit: the sirmata, the small houses with its large, colourful doors. In the beginning, they were used for the protection of the boats during the winter period, but later they were converted to small holiday houses.


Plaka. It is the island’s capital city. It is built on a hill of an altitude of 220m. and offers majestic view to the gulf of Milos. It is a picturesque settlement, with paved narrow streets, old traditional neighbourhoods with whitewashed yards and bloomed balconies, which offers to the visitor wonderful pictures from different ages.
Don’t miss to visit: the Venetian fortress of the 13th century and enjoy the marvellous view and the unforgettable sunset. The Archaeological and Folklore Museum, the church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Korfiatissa and the Catholic church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Roses,  a sample for the presence of Catholics on the island since the ages of the Venetian domination. In addition, you should visit the churches of the Assumption of Panagia (Virgin Mary) or Mesa Panagia and Thalassitra.

Pollonia. It is located at the north eastern part of the island in a distance of 10km from Adamantas. It is a picturesque fishing village built on a lovely small gulf. It is a famous tourist resort of Milos with a wonderful sandy beach.
Don’t miss to visit: the church of Saint Paraskevi, the typical jewel of Pollonia, situated at the right edge of the gulf. It is built at the edge of the pier, on a high spot which is visible from all the places of the village. Every morning, at the pier the fishermen lay up their boats and caiques, full of fresh fish, octopuses and lobsters to supply the local fish taverns of the island.

Triovasali & Plakes. Triovasali (Triovasalos and Pera Triovasalos) are two densely populated villages with remarkable trading. Very close to the Triovasali, it is located the picturesque small village of Plakes.
Don’t miss to visit: Saint Spiridonas to Triovasalos and Saint George to Pera Triovasalos. Every year on Easter day, at Triovasali is taking place the custom of the burning of Judas which is dated back to the early Christian ages. On Holy Friday, at Plakes a great number of people is gathered to watch the representation of the Unnailing of Jesus from the Cross.

Tripiti. It is situated at the southern side of Plaka. It is a lovely, coastal village which offers amazing view to Milo’s gulf.
Don’t miss to visit the picturesque windmills. Very close to the village you will find the catacombs.

At the island there are many remarkable sandy beaches. The most known beaches of Milos are: Agia Kiriaki, Agios Konstantinos, Gerakas, Gerontas, Embourios, Kipos,Kleftiko, Lagada, Mantrakia, Mitakas, Xilokeratia, Paliochori, Papafragas, Papikinou, Pachena, Plathiena, Pollonia, Provatas, Rivari, Sarakiniko, Sikia, Triades, Tsigrado, Fatourena, Firiplaka, Firopotamos, Chivadolimni.

How to get there

By ship:
Milos is connected to Piraeus by everyday itineraries. The trip straight to Milos is 5 hours but there is another line to Milos which passes through Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Kimolos too which lasts 7 hours. During the summer season Milos is connected (3-4 times a week) to Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros, Santorini, Crete and the islands of eastern Cyclades. Addinionally, there are everyday itineraries by high speed boats.

By airplane: Milos is connected to Athens by everyday flights. The flight lasts 30minutes and the airport is 4,5km far away from Adamantas.
