Learn about Donousa Island
 
 

The island of Donoussa has a total surface area of 13 sq. km and it lies to the east of Naxos and north of Amorgos. Its rocky and rough terrain, gives rise to many small coves with small beaches in between.

 
 
 

Stavros, the harbour and capital of the island, is located on the south side of Donoussa. The other four villages of the island are Kalotaritissa, Troullos, Messaria and Mersini.

 
 
 

The island has been inhabited since the ancient years. In the Roman era the island served as a place of exile, while in the Medieval times it was a pirate refuge.

 
 
 

You should visit the cave called Spilia Tichu, located on the northwestern part of the island, the remnants of the Geometrical era settlements and the churches of Timios Stavros, Panagia and Agios Ioannis.

How to get there
By plane: The closest islands with airports are Naxos and Paros.
By Ferry: It is also connected to the mainland (Pireus) through a boat line.
