Transport
Buses
There are three types of buses on Cyprus, which will help you travel around the island:
- Intercity buses, which run daily with frequent timetables, connecting all the towns on the island .
- Rural buses which connect almost all the villages with their nearest towns. These run relatively frequently once or twice every day except Sundays.
- Urban buses which run between different areas of the towns regularly throughout the day. The timetables are extended until late at night in some tourist areas during the summer.
Taxis
There are three types of taxi which cover the whole island:
Intercity taxis which passengers can share with another 4-7 other people. These connect the main towns in Cyprus and run every half hour from Monday to Friday, from 06:00 in the morning until 18:00 in the evening. On Saturdays and Sundays this service stops one hour earlier at 17:00. You can book a seat by phone or from the network of companies that arrange this service.
Rural taxies which operate in the villages. You can only hire these from or to their base points. These taxis do not have a meter; the charge is based on kilometres/tariff.
The urban taxi service runs 24 hours a day in all towns. These taxis can be pre-booked or hailed on the street. Urban taxis must have a meter and charging begins from the time the passenger gets into the taxi.
On the following public holidays, taxis will charge an additional €1.96 per journey: 24, 25, 26 and 31 December, 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Day, Easter Monday and 1 May. Transport of animals is only permitted when they are being transported in special boxes. The charge is €0.54 per animal.
Cruises
There are a number of minicruises starting from Cyprus, with trips usually lasting between two and five days on large comfortable ships. You can book tickets whilst on holiday in Cyprus or via a travel agency abroad which includes these cruises in their brochures. There are also a number of short cruises to and from various sites around the island. These set sail from all the marinas and fishing refuges. |
