Mesolonggi has been declared a "Holy City" because it offered too much in the fight against the Turks. Great poets and painters like Lord Byron and Delacroi have been inspired by the bloody exit of the Greeks on the 10 th of April 1826. Five prime ministers have come from Messologi and also a whole school of great writers and poets in Greek literature. Today it is a beautiful city that offers visitors quality food, entertainment and an incredible sunset. The locals are very hospitable.
There is a small Venetian castle on the harbor of Nafpaktos that characterizes the city. It has a history of 2000 years and has been the cause for great bloodshed because of its strategic position. There are also great beaches and the villages in mountainous Nafpaktia. Also the area around Trichonida Lake is of extreme beauty.
Mountain Nafpaktia is a spectacular area. Exquisite forests of oak-trees, fir-trees, beeches, plane-trees and chestnut-trees combined with impressive gorges and natural springs compose a landscape of unique natural beauty.
Small and big mammals live in Mountain Nafpaktia like wild boars, roes, foxes, wolfs, hares, squirrels, ferrets etc. and birds like partridges, blackbirds, magpies, woodpeckers and some species of eagle. |
